How It Started
Most people who live in and around Celina, Texas have seen the donkeys on the property just north of Brookshire's. What many people don't know is that those donkeys have all been rescued from certain death by a local Celina resident named Karla Vargas.
Karla travels all over Texas rescuing these unwanted donkeys from "kill pens" where they were set to be set to be euthanized. Of course, bringing them back to Celina is no easy task and requires everything from transportation, veternarian bills, feed, hay, minerals and medication. Ultimately, Karla works to find these "babies" (as she calls them) a forever home.
Host Ron Lyons heard about Karla Vargas and her Celina based donkey rescue called "Donkey And Horse Rescue" and set out to learn more. After a few phone calls and text messages, Ron sat down with Karla and had her as a guest on CelinaRadio.com. During the interview, Ron discovered just how challenging it is to rescue these donkeys. He made the decision that he would to find a way to help Karla and her efforts to help save even more of them.
The Challenge
Mayor Sean Terry invited Celina, Texas Police Chief, John Cullison to an "indoor fishing challenge" to help raise awareness and support for Karla's donkey rescue. Chief Cullison welcomed the challenge and is determined to easily beat the mayor. The payoff for winning the challenge is getting a rescued donkey named after the winner PLUS lunch from Papa Gallos hand delivered by the losing challenger.
The results of the Indoor Fishing Challenge between Chief Cullison and Mayor Terry will be shown in a special video to be released July 8th, on Celinaradio.com -and it's going to be something special!
How You Can Participate
The Mayor and The Chief are both hoping you will also get involved! They would like for you to choose either Team Terry or Team Cullison to cheer for and support. To choose a side, leave a comment below in support of either team and feel free to come back often and support your side! Please remember to keep all comments fun and friendly.
The purpose of the challenge has many facets. First, both the Mayor and the Chief would love to have bragging rights. Second, there is a free lunch from Papa Gallos riding on it, Third, who wouldn't want a donkey named after them? But most importantly, they are doing this challenge to help bring awareness to the donkey rescue we have right here in Celina, Texas.
